OBITUARY JOHN EDWARD BAHEN December 27, 1927 - November 18, 2016 Dad passed away on Friday at age 88, son of Katherine, (nee Simmonds) and George Bahen and brother of G. William Bahen (Anne). Loving husband of Margaret Edith (nee Campbell), best father to Stuart, Susan Chant (Ted) and Michael (1984), grandfather to Katie Armitage (Joseph), Scott Chant, Jack, Susie and Mike Bahen and great-grandfather to Hunter Armitage. John grew up in Toronto and graduated from Vaughan Road Collegiate and the University of Toronto in Civil Engineering. He was a natural builder and people person. He started his career with McNamara Construction and finished as President of Kiewit Canada in 1994. With his team he successfully built some of Canada's largest and most difficult civil works, including dams and powerhouses, among many other projects. He was always an optimist. He would chase opportunities long after others would have quit. He was a true leader and developer of people. John and Marg's philanthropy over the years has greatly enriched Canada's medical, academic and cultural communities. John was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Engineering from his alma mater and received the Order of Canada and The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Award. An avid boater, he never saw a boat he didn't want to buy. And at the helm on Georgian Bay, he never had enough time to get where he wanted, was oblivious to his wake and was too well known to the shoals. At home, he was the best husband, father, grandfather and great- grandfather we all could have imagined. He greeted everyone with his big warm smile and that twinkle in his eye. Dad was always generous and kind. Fifteen years ago, Dad suffered a devastating stroke. Despite his incapacity, he remained gracious, optimistic and never lost that twinkle in his eye. Mom poured her heart and soul into Dad's care and comfort all of their last years. Our thanks to Fely, James, Gerald and Eric who have gently and lovingly looked after Dad for many years. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, December 9th at All Saints Anglican Church, 12935 Keele St., King City. In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to the Margaret Bahen Hospice for York Region, c/o the Southlake Regional Health Centre Foundation.
