Worked as a shoe maker for some time He was also a herring fisherman . With the use of just one hand he built a sailing vessel. This sailing vessel is in a glass case and was moved from one log house to another, until it was taken to the McLachlan family farm in Komoka, Ontario, Canada. The sailing vessel has been recorded to be located at the Mclachlan family farm in Komoka, Ontario, Canada as of the year 2006. The McLachlan family farm in Komoka ontario was built in 1880. The Mclachlan family farm took a year to build and was painted in 1881, which was stated on the window above the front door. Shoe eyes were used as the rings through which the rigging on the boat was threaded. A first cousin of the present operator of the farm(Donald Archibald McLachlan whom married Helen\Jessie Young), Jean Gordon of Stratford, has a minature boat made by the same Donald Mclachlan whom married Janet MacLachlan and came to Canada in 1838. Burried in the Campbell Cemetery in Komoka, Ontario, Canada.
